That’s why most animals respond more enthusiastically to simple, repetitive sounds. When it comes to music, animals have different preferences depending on their species. According to Snowdon, no matter how well composers and perfect dog, cat and monkey songs is, the animals will certainly never like music more them humans do. Because they lack a musical ability that we have: to relative pitch.

“I’ve found that animals have a great sense of absolute pitch, but they don’t understand relative pitch,” he said. “If you transpose the sequence of notes to a different key, so that the same intervals are present but the key is different, they can’t recognize relationships between notes anymore.”
