How to Get Into the Music Industry With No Experience: The Ultimate Guide

Music is an important part of our lives. It can make us feel happy, sad, and everything in between. It’s no surprise that the music industry is a multi-billion dollar business. With this much money on the line, it’s understandable that many people want to take their passion for music and turn it into a career. But how do you make your dream come true? The best way to start a career in the music industry is by understanding what you need to do. Keep reading for more information on how to get started as a musician or producer

Build a music portfolio

If you’re just starting out and you have absolutely no experience, then you’re better off building up a collection of videos, songs, and things of that nature. The first videos you record are going to be the ones you’re going to be releasing on Youtube or elsewhere, so make sure you’re building up a base of content.  Take 10,000 steps a day. That’s my challenge to myself. — Brent Burns (@burnsbrent31) January 18, 2017  Now, you don’t have to spend tons of money on professionally recorded video if you don’t have it. You can record yourself playing with your laptop camera on, which is far less expensive than an expensive camera. But once you get into a groove recording your own songs, you may want to invest in a camera that will allow you to easily transfer footage directly into a video.

Play at local venues

You don’t have to be an artist to play your own music at local venues. You could be a performer at a party, an in-house band member at a small business, a party DJ, or anything else you can think of. You’ll learn a lot about what is and isn’t effective from this process, and if nothing else, you can just have a lot of fun doing it!  At first, you’ll probably want to focus on learning the skill of a live performer, but after a while you’ll be ready to learn the technical side of things. For example, you might be able to learn to play a song you want to perform in an instrument, and then you can be an instrument virtuoso.

Network with other musicians

The most reliable way to start making money in the music industry is to play the game. This means networking with other musicians and being super interested in what they do, whether they are trying to break in as a session musician or a band, or they’re making music to turn into podcasts. You might not be able to use their music, but there will always be other connections for you to make. There will always be people to help you get discovered.  Get involved with their communities  If you make your own music, you are also part of the community that is creating that music. Most musicians are involved in the communities of their genre. If you are playing a metal band, you will most likely be involved with one. You may even be part of a metal band.

Create a YouTube channel

If you’re young, or you haven’t yet reached your peak marketability, you can really use a YouTube channel. You can post covers and try to go viral, or you can post your original music. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a lot of viewers, just upload as many videos as you can. Also, not everything you do will get views! Remember, people will actually be watching, but your videos might not be in the top five or ten. The goal is to gain exposure and build an audience over time, and that will come with experience.  But what is experience? This might sound like a cliche, but experience really is all about the more you do something, the better you get at it. Don’t try to get into the music industry if you don’t know what you’re doing, it will be a disaster.

Find a mentor

This is a difficult thing to do. In fact, there is still a stigma attached to the idea of seeking help from someone who isn’t directly involved in the music industry. But in reality, it’s an amazing way to give yourself the confidence you need to start building a business. You’ll learn how to connect with people, and build a network of contacts. And you’ll be able to ask for feedback without being perceived as being needy. This is extremely important because even the smallest requests will be seen as requests for help, and people will be more willing to help you if you have a supporter on your team.  Start a band  Another method of getting into the music industry without any experience is starting a band.
